SAN FRANCISCO, United States, September 8, 2026 — Global UI/UX design agency Wavespace has unveiled ‘Beyond the Chatbox’, a design framework for building AI agent interfaces that replaces the traditional chatbot with generative UI. The framework provides a repeatable approach to designing agents that demonstrate their work, gain user trust, and maintain user control.

The Chatbox is not a layer on top of the process of an agent becoming adopted; it’s the process itself. The framework provides five practices for agent design: make the agent’s reasoning visible to the user so they can understand what it is doing and why, design for state, instead of showing the user what messages to respond to, show them what interface they need to use to complete a task, build explicit trust cues that expose confidence and sources, keep clear human approval and handoff points before the agent acts, and render the specific interface a task requires (form, table, set of controls, etc.) rather than returning everything as text.

These practices combine to help get agent products out of the one-chat-box-shipped tool. The framework responds to a widening gap between how fast AI agents are being deployed and how well users actually adopt them.

Gartner forecasts that 40% of enterprise applications will include task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025.

Meanwhile, Gartner estimates over 40% of agentic AI initiatives will be discontinued by the end of 2027, due to lack of business value and insufficient controls.

One of the factors that determines whether an agent is understood, trusted, and retained in production is interface design, according to Wavespace.

Wavespace describes Beyond the Chatbox as a method of design and not a product or platform. It is used in agent product design engagements and is designed to complement the team’s current model, data, and engineering decisions to communicate state, confidence, and control to the people who use the agent. The framework is based on the patterns the agency has created in AI product work with startups and enterprise teams.

Applied work on AI products illustrates the approach. Wavespace redesigned the Kodezi, an AI tool for developers, by focusing on more explicit feedback, clearer paths, and more robust system states.

The redesigned experience helped developers reach their first fix 34% sooner and increased use of the platform’s AI-assisted workflows by 4%; the refined product also supported Kodezi in closing a $1.8 million seed round. These are the categories of outcomes the framework is built to influence: faster comprehension, higher trust, and more consistent engagement with AI features.

“Most teams send an agent as a chat box and let users believe in it,” said Shahid Miah, Founder and CEO of Wavespace. “Trust does not come from the model alone.

It’s from an interface that displays what the agent is doing, where the agent’s answer came from, and where the person is still in control. That’s how we design beyond the Chatbox.

Wavespace built the foundation of various AI products, including copilots, autonomous agents, and AI capabilities within current software.

It is designed to be applied whether a team is building a new agent from the ground up or adding agentic capability to an established product, and it slots into the agency’s broader UI/UX, product design, and design-system work.
